A thoughtful and caring friend from Canada recently gifted me with a
link to three lectures by Belden Lane. Lane is the author of a wonderful book
that was and continues to be significantly affecting
for me. The book is a mix of genres (including memoir, biographical narrative,
spirituality, history & theological reflection) and is titled The Solace of Fierce Landscapes: Exploring
Desert and Mountain Spirituality. The spirituality of uncharted wilderness,
desert and mystery continues to exert a profound pull on my journey. Lane is
wise accompanier and fellow-wayfarer.
The lectures were delivered as the 2010 JJ Thiessen Lectures (Eugene Peterson delivered the 1998 JJ Thiessen Lectures under the title Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places – ISBN 0-920718-62-0).
Lecture 1: October 19, 2010 – Places on the Edge: The Power of Desert/Mountain Terrain in Christian Thought.
Lecture 2: October 19, 2010 – The Counter-Cultural Spirituality of the Desert Fathers for Today.
Lecture 3: October 20, 2010 – Fire in the Desert: Learning from the Desert Mothers.
You can listen to the lectures or download them here.
Thanks for the link, Paul.
In listening to Dr. Lane I'm drawn to my own experiences of desert/wilderness (especially 'Four Corners', Negev, Wadi Rum, Kimberley).
All the best, Merv.
