Alan writes – This year I called in at the Christmas installation in the Christchurch city Square. It is made up of seven shipping containers in which the story of Christmas is cleverly told through art and interactive media. It is the brain child of Peter and Joyce Majendie who lead Side Door and the Side Door Arts Trust.
Two exhibits really caught my eye. The first was a container divided in two by barbed wire. On one half you were invited to walk over $100 bills and look at pictures from fashion magazines, Holiday brochures and expensive car magazines. On the other side of the barbed wire the floor was saw dust and the pictures were of poverty and injustice. It was a very stark portrayal of the world we live in.
In the final exhibit were was the word ‘God’ made from farm fence posts and partially buried in the ground to signify (I guess) God come to earth. It was a very clever and engaging Christmas presentation in the centre of the city. It was free and it wasn’t overly preachy….
